Jack Kerouac, author of “On the Road,” used to kneel and pray before he began writing. His diaries are filled with prayers and drawings of crosses.
Popped into the Met and saw the Water Memories exhibit, which explores the significance of water to Indigenous people in the United States.
In 1989, Paula Abdul’s “Opposites Attract” was released as a single, and the catchy pop song played nonstop on the radio. “I take two steps forward, I take two steps back,” began the chorus. Writing often feels like that. I write two words, then delete one. It’s a terrible way to write. When we overthink each sentence before it’s even on the page, we don’t just slow our process — we block our creativity. And the same goes for life. We get in our own way when we overthink and are so anxious about doing everything “perfectly.” To quote another musician, John Lennon sang, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans"
