Writing Wednesday: Your Taste Is Killer

23 Nov

For the first couple of years you make stuff, it’s just not that good.  It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not.  But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer.  And your taste is why your work disappoints you. …It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions.

I agree and would expand on that quote to include any artistic endeavor. There is always a gap between the artist’s vision and ones early attempts to bring that vision forth — into the real world for public consumption. This “gap” is best remedied by repetitive attempts — and that is what makes Art so frustrating, at times, and oh so rewarding. This applies to photography, painting, driving, and even cooking. I guess this is why I used to serve burnt food or made lousy dinners and in my early days a the family chef we often sent out for last-minute-pizza!!
